Old Christmas Washington Irving 9781541178205 Books

This a delightful tale of Washington Irving going back to an old country estate in England to celebrate a Christmas of Olde England. Irving. takes us from the travel to the estate,Christmas Eve and all the festivities of Christmas Day. The squire and his household still celebrate Christmas as they did 100 or more years before this time. Irving laments the passing of these traditions and hopes they would last forever. It's interesting that even in Irving's time that someone, like today, laments passing traditions for the more modern ones. This is a very short book and is wonderful to read. This is easily a book that could be read every Christmas season much like Dickens, A Christmas Carol.

Old Christmas Washington Irving 9781541178205 Books Reviews

Washington Irving is a really great and nostalgic writer. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
This is a great example of the kind of leisurely reading the 19th century enjoyed and produced. If you love Mr. Pickwick you will find it easy to picture him at Bracebridge Hall. It would also make a marvelous libretto for a children's Christmas ballet. Spoiler alert - no plot. The kind of piece you read over every year as Christmas approaches, and never tire of.
This book takes one back to a time most would enjoy living in, especially that of Christmas. Mr. Irving tells everyone how it was in another age where many truly had a merry Christmas. This book show us how Christmas use to be many years ago. The descriptions are true to the era and the life of that time. Pictures of that day add to the enjoyment of the book, too. I highly recommend this book to those who would endeavor to enjoy a little of the past, instead of the time we live in now. Merry Christmas to all.
Dickens read this before incorporating the already expiring English country traditions Irving encountered on his travels and detailed in this book into first Pickwick Papers and later into the urban setting of "A Christmas Carol". Much of what we American include in our holiday festivities from kissing under the MistleToe to drinking and playing games on Chritmas Eve is attributable to this book. This is not a long piece and well worth the read. This free edition is very readable.
This story was basically what reintroduced the celebration of Christmas to the United States. A lovely quick read for the holiday season that shares the traditions and customs of Christmas from ancient times and old English celebrations.
This is a nice short work that is about the Christmas spirit or what should be the spirit of Christmas. You can see where Dickens used parts to develop his idea of the proper spirit of Christmas. I would say the difference is that Washington focuses on the spirit of happiness and community as an end whereas Dickens brings into the story redemption.
I loved this book. I've been a student of holiday history for more than 30 years. I can't believe I never came across this book until now. Anyone who enjoys Washington Irving (Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle) or Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol) will enjoy this book. It's a proper old English Christmas, the type undoubtedly celebrated by Mr. Darcy at his manor in Pride & Prejudice or by the family in The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. For those who have read extensively on pagan origins of modern holiday celebrations or have read about medieval customs (lord of misrule, etc.), much will be familiar. It is all here - the ancient manor house in the country, the huge yule log burning on the hearth, the old harper in the corner, the boar's head, the peacock pie, the wassail bowl, all the games - snapdragon, blind man's bluff, etc. There are visits from Morris dancers and singing by village waites under the window. The journey by coach through the countryside, the shadowy darkness, the warmth and welcome of Christmas Eve, the church service and light of Christmas Day, the merrymaking by young and old alike, the generosity of the Christmas Day Dinner - all described in lavish and loving detail. The detailed and charming illustrations by Randolph Caldecott (for whom the Caldecott award was named) add a great deal to the text. You could not have one without the other.
